Scene 1
Evan is alone at home. It’s early afternoon. There’s a knock at the door. Evan opens the door and sees Cory.
- Cory
- Hey, Evan! It’s me, Cory. Remember, we met at the party last week?
- Evan
- Oh, yes. Hi, Cory. Come on in!
Cory comes in.
- Cory
- Evan, are you still looking for a job?
- Evan
- Yes.
- Cory
- I think I can help, but you need to be able to keep a secret.
- Evan
- No problem.
- Cory
- All right. I need to have a delivery made this afternoon. If it gets done, I get $100,000. I’ll split it with you fifty percent if you help me.
- Evan
- What do I have to do?
- Cory
- Pick up a package at my house at three and deliver it to Tampa by six. And don’t talk to anyone about it. This has to be kept strictly confidential. I’ll give you the address to take it to when you pick it up.
- Evan
- You can count on me. Strictly confidential.
- Cory
- I’ll see you at three, then.
Cory leaves. He doesn’t see Evan’s brother Eric outside. As Eric is about to enter the house, he hears Cory talking on his cell phone.
- Cory
- I found someone to do the job. I don’t want anyone to be able to link you and me together, so get rid of him as soon as you get the package.
Eric enters the house.
- Eric
- Hi, Evan. What was Cory doing here?
- Evan
- It’s confidential. I can’t tell you.
- Eric
- I overheard Cory saying something that disturbed me.
- Evan
- You’ll have to tell me about it later. I finally got a job, so I have to leave now.
- Eric
- Who are you doing this job for?
-
- Evan
- That’s none of your business.
- Eric
- Is it for Cory?
- Evan
- Look, Eric. I know you’re trying to take care of me, and whenever I’m in trouble I can count on you, but right now I have a job to do and I don’t need you.
Evan leaves. Eric follows. Evan gets in his car, but it won’t start. A neighbor notices.
- Neighbor
- What’s wrong with your car?
- Evan
- It won’t start.
- Neighbor
- I just got a new car. Would you like to borrow it?
- Evan
- That would be great!
Evan takes the keys, gets in the neighbor’s car, and begins to drive away. A police car follows and pulls him over.
- Officer
- Sir, would you please step out of the car?
- Evan
- What’s the problem, officer?
- Officer
- Sir, this vehicle is stolen. I’m going to have to take you into custody.
- Evan
- It can’t be stolen! I just borrowed it from my neighbor. Look, he’s standing right there!
- Neighbor
- I’ve never seen this car before.
Evan sees Eric watching.
- Evan
- Eric, I need you now! Tell them what happened. You know I didn’t steal this car.
Eric goes back inside the house. The police officer takes Evan away.
Scene 2
It’s the next day. Evan is in jail. A police officer opens the door to his cell.
- Officer
- Your brother posted bail for you. You’re free to go.
- Evan
- My brother could have helped me yesterday.
Evan leaves the jail. Eric is waiting for him outside.
- Eric
- Hi, Evan. I’ve got to talk to you. Let’s go home.
Evan looks at Eric, turns his back, and walks away.
